We acknowledge that we live and work on unceded country. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Nothing exists on its own not even time. There is no future without a past and the past is no future at all. We seek salvation in the ruins of a shattered self. In the collapsing overreach of manifest colonialism we search in the darkness for reassurance. For the recovery we can live with. The one we can sustain and can sustain us. But our reflection is contrived, contorted, incomplete, broken and interrupted. The aperture too small. Perhaps decay will reflect back. But the mirror can only tell so much. The book holds the impossible together. Intersected by the truth and lies we tell ourselves as we stare into the abyss asking endlessly ‘Are we there yet?’ The answer of course is yes and no.

Size: 310 x 213 x 315mm
Materials: 10,000 year old Ancient Red Gum, Paper, Acrylic Mirror, recovered copper wire, Tung oil.
Edition of 5

Image Description
Monochrome form with two intersecting planes; a horizontal plane which rests on a white surface is a thick ream of paper sandwiched between two pieces of black timber. Towards the back of the horizontal plane there is a slot that runs through the two pieces of timber and ream of paper. From this slot a roughly hewn, shiny, black, rippled piece of timber protrudes. There are two apertures In the rippled piece of wood; one is round, the other follows the lines of the ripples. Through these is an imperfect reflection in a plastic mirror. Light is reflecting from the mirror onto the top layer of the horizontal black timber.
